This rule is consistent with the administration's objective from their previous time in office, that is, to reserve H1Bs for highly skilled individuals skilled (in this case, they are likely making the case that Wage Level = value) and not fresh graduates converting off OPT, which was never intended to be a path at all.

Not sure there is much to oppose here, the proposed system would give preference to those with higher salaries. 

That makes sense given that the H1B system is supposed to exist to bring in workers with higher level skills and education when such workers are not easy to find in the domestic labor market. 

Many companies have indeed used H1B to replace higher paid American workers (or those who they can treat worse since legal status is tied to the employer). 

With this system companies will still get the people they need but they will have to pay more for them, if they really need them then the extra pay will be worth it.

As someone who has worked in tech for a long time. I have seen so much fraud. Companies lying about the specific skills or even the nature of the position to get a H-1B issued to cheaper labor. Too many times the people actually worth hiring under H1b had to go against hundreds of thousands of other applicants earning 60k, 70k in simple jobs in the lottery just because they were lumped together under the same visa. Wonder if this closes off the way people who lose job on H1B stays in country with I think CPT or something. Had a roommate do that after AT&amp;T had layoffs. Stem-opt also may need changing too. H1-B will still be there the allocation being change is what’s proposed. This proposal would unfortunately favor larger employers. Though it would cut out legs on scummy companies abusing it. I think it needs some carve out for unique positions such as medical workers and civil engineers in rural areas in desperate need of workers. Also this doesn’t fix the main issue with H1-B which is the insane green card limit which makes no logical sense

So ICE is going to continue to not focus on rural environments and instead go to inner-city and suburban areas to conduct these raids.  As far as I know of there hasn't been much mention of ICE going to hotels to detain people.

I’ve always been of the mindset that immigration as an issue has always been overblown. No matter how many people you can realistically deport it would have no significant impact on our paychecks or cost of living. If anything, if you fire and deport illegals, they would be replaced by other workers who would demand a higher wage and employers would make up the loss by charging more for the end product or just outsource labor to other countries if that’s an option. 

I hate to admit this because prior to the civil war this was the argument. “Who’s going to pick our cotton?” 

The reason illegal immigrants should be deported is because most of other countries wouldn’t just let you waltz in without citizenship, a passport, visa or whatever and welcome you with open arms so we as a nation have no obligation to do so either. But pretending like deportation has significant external benefit to us outside of that is just naive. 

Obama had record deportation numbers. Numbers that I don’t have faith Donald Trump will exceed. Republicans didn’t love him for it. Democrats didn’t hate him for it. I’m all for nationalism but I hate when a politician uses it for virtue signaling just to earn cheap votes. Trump built only a fourth of the wall he promised, though he claimed it was completed. It costed $15 billion and America paid for it.

I'm not even from the US but this bill appears to have an overall net negative outcome for immigrants.

Just a few examples:

- Full family detention requirements (reduced safeguards for children)
- Additional fixed fees for applications for asylum, work rights, protection status
- changes to food assistance eligibility, even within the recognised "legal" groups
- changes in child benefit (CTC) eligibility for 'mixed' families where one parent has immigration controls

The positives you cite are just knock on effects of the negatives the bill itself (or admin policy) causes:

- More judges - which in no way will offset the likely massive rise in removals and cases needed to be addressed. Ergo, I dont think this will actually reduce down the wait time unless they plan to also just not follow the proper process anymore (as evidenced by the admin for the last 5 months)
- More Detention Support - which in no way will offset the likely massive rise in detentions that would have otherwise been community addressed/ not flagged for immigration enforcement action in the first place.

The original bill wanted to attach a $1000 fee for asylum applications, its been reduced to $100. Having a fee at all is psychopathic.

Without actually reading up on the three specific benefits you mention, the latter two don’t support your argument. 

Ideally, a detention center doesn’t help legal immigrants… unless the idea is that legal immigrants will also go there (which doesn’t help them.) 

Also, “prioritizes legitimate vs opportunistic” seems very loaded without further clarification. Asylum is a legitimate cause for immigration. 

Also, you can’t argue “the bill will help immigrants” when the administration has been throwing law abiding immigrants, documented or not, and even US citizens into detention facilities.

There are more immigration judges, but that is mainly to increase deportations. You should also remember that Trump wants to end asylum. The bill also significantly increases the fees that immigrants have to pay to claim asylum and increases the fees on other actions immigrants might need to take.

Sure, it might create new detention facilities, but it also gives ICE billions more in funding. 

For any undocumented immigrant deporting them does not help them. Their life is much better here.

I'm not sure about legitimate claims vs opportunistic ones. Because Trump blocked any person from the southern border from claiming asylum(although a judge has ruled against it), but he allowed a bunch of white South Africans to claim asylum, using a genocide that didn't exist to back up his claim. They didn't have any legitimate claim to asylum.

The bill is also bad for legal immigrants in the country, taking away healthcare and SNAP benefits from many immigrants in the country (although that is not an immigration specific policy). It also takes away any government funded aid (Medicaid, medicare, CHIP, SNAP) from any refugees, people who are granted asylum, people with withholding of removal, and anyone with temporary protected status.

ICE raided a few farms. It got publicity and suddenly workers from other farms, across the nation, stopped turning up out of fear.

Trump messed with U.S. food security and people in places pulled their weight FAST and HARD for Trump to turn around this fast.

It appears that our current immigration policy is to target locations and sectors the Administration feels is adversarial to it. ICE raids are being used to menace communities which weren't or haven't been adequately supportive of the administration.

Trump’s workers probably stopped showing up at his hotels, I would assume. Or some of his rich friends talked to him and told him he was messing with the money. All of the war on illegal immigration stuff is a scam, always has been. Just a manufactured enemy for political purposes. There would be almost no illegal immigration if companies didn’t need them for and were not allowed to openly hire them for cheap labor.
